Liberty Hill GH 026

A nest of black ants in a tree at the Liberty Hill Great House. Nests like these in pimento (allspice) trees were recognized in 2001 by Jamaica’s Ministry of Agriculture as a threat to pimento production–not because the ants harmed the berries, but because growers struggled to find harvesters willing to content with the ants.

Notice the constructed tunnel down to ground level.
